School-age children, ages 7 to 12, have the opportunity to become creative kids this summer by joining the Creative Kids Group at the South Garland Branch Library. This program series features a class to engage almost every child. During this workshop children will create their own diary like Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Each diary will contain interactive prompts for writing, coloring, and drawing. Registration is required to attend Creative Kids and begins Wednesday, May 1. Due to the popularity of these programs, registration is limited to 30 participants, and parents may register their children for a maximum of two programs per month. Brett Roberts presents an interactive magic show featuring alien puppets, a space race, and a flag routine that teaches kids about the American flag the astronauts placed on the moon. Brett will teach the kids the difference between science fiction and real science too! The purpose of the Library Board is to advise the City Council on problems relating to the Public Library and to recommend plans and programs to promote the library system for the city. The Board approves library policies, long range plans, and other pertinent documents as they are recommended by Claire Bausch, Director of Libraries. The Library Board meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at the William E. Dollar Municipal Building in Work Session chambers, located at 200 N. Fifth St., Garland, TX 75040. All meetings are open to the public unless the Board goes into executive session. Meeting agendas and approved minutes are posted on the library website http://library.garlandtx.gov for citizen review.

Children can develop their engineering skills, an important STEAM concept, by attending Block Party at the Library, a program from the Nicholson Memorial Library System for children ages 4 through 12. Block Party at the Library is designed to help children test their building skills and stretch their imaginations while having fun. The program challenges participants to use building blocks to create unique structures within one hour. Block Party at the Library is a free event open to children ages 4 through 12 and their caregivers. Children ages 6 and under must be accompanied by an adult in order to attend. The Library provides all supplies used at this event. Due to planned construction, event locations are subject to change. Join the Creature Teacher to learn fun facts about a wide assortment of animals before meeting the creatures themselves. The Creature Teacher has been educating children for more than 15 years. Many of her animals are rescue animals. The Friends of the Library meet bi-monthly on the third Monday of the month, 5 p.m. at the Central Library. Anyone interested in the activities of the Friends is welcome to attend. Friends of the Nicholson Memorial Library is a community organization supporting and promoting the Library. The Friends sponsors activities to raise funds for the purchase of library materials and equipment, and underwrites programming to benefit all library users.
